Simulation of power frequency magnetic fields

Low frequency magnetic fields are commonly generated by stray currents, transformers and switchboards. BEMI have developed own software to simulate such fields in three dimension in complex enviroments.

The software handles multiple pathways freely distributed in three dimensional space carrying defined currents. The field can be calculated in points, on planes or over whole space. For each calculated point the field is given as a vector with direction and magnitude. Time series of fields varying with time is also possible.

The software has been used in planning installations of swithboards inside large buildings, making illustrations of fields around power lines or stray currents and much more.

    Example

The plot is the result on a calculation on a building where there are stray currents on pipes entering the building from the outside. The net current on the cable entering the house is 6 Ampere which splits into 2x3 Ampere onto the two pipes. The vertical axis is logarithmic (dBuT).

Simulation of field strength at a distance from cellular towers

The rapidly growing use of ellular phones (such as NMT900 and GSM900) have given rise to questions about health effects and safety. BEMI receives more and more such queries about fields from cellular phones and/or base station towers. There are citizens groups around the world opposing the towers of various reasons. Whatever the reason, BEMI can make actual measurements or simulations giving facts to be used in the decision process.

    Example

As an example of actual calculations for a GSM base station placed on flat ground on top of a 48 meter high mast, outputting 40 dBm (10 Watt) + 16 dBd (antenna gain over dipole). The results are calculated for a mobile reciver at 2 meter above ground and plotted against distance for various types of enviroments:

    · "Free space" is an ideal case but is valid over water (boat to land).
    · "Open space" is valid over flat ground or over water (land to boat).
    · "Suburban"
    · "Philadelphia"
    · "Newark (urban)"
    · "New York"
    · "Tokyo"

Please note that actual local enviroment always varies from these statistical models. Use them as an example that can help understanding discussions in these matters. Always consult actual measurements when necessary. This is an EXAMPLE ONLY!
